SEMINAR IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES
Discussion Project Parameters
- Choose
a partner or go solo.
- Choose
a discussion topic from class approved list.
- Complete
the following preparation:
- Research
of topic shall include:
a.
A minimum of 3 credible online sources.
b.
If scripture is used then a commentary must be
cited.
c.
If a survey is used then a minimum survey of 50
people.
d.
If interviews are used then a minimum of 2
personal interviews with adults – preferably experts on the topic.
e.
All research shall be noted in a bibliography
- Pre-discussion
activity shall include one of the following:
a.
An article for the class to read online or as a
handout. This must be assigned at least
a day before the discussion.
b.
An activity for the class to participate in such
as a role play, a survey, a small group discussion or problem solving exercise,
an art exercise, etc.
The activity, of course, should
prepare class for discussion and relate to the topic in an appropriate way.
Activity will be
described in a typed section of follow up report.
- Discussion
preparation shall include:
a.
A question bank with a minimum of 5 categories,
3 questions per categories, for a total of 15 solid questions.
b.
At least one visual aid to help show basic
information necessary for discussion of topic (can range from pictures to movie
clips to graphs and charts).
c.
A strategy for the flow of the discussion should
be planned and written down. Anticipate
how to keep discussion meaningful and moving.
Lastly, a plan to wrap up the discussion with a summary type of question
or statement.
d.
Questions must be phrased in a way that
encourages responses beyond yes or no.
e.
Partners will divide up questions to be asked so
that both participate in leading discussion.
- Discussion
day will involve:
a.
A prescheduled class period.
b.
Introduction of team and topic.
c.
Leading with the activity. (unless it fits best within discussion time)
d.
Leading discussion with leaders demonstrating a
knowledge of topic, questions, visual aids, and flow plan.
e.
Discussion should demonstrate flow and a planned
conclusion.
f.
Group submits typed report a day or two later in
the format provided and includes bibliography, questions, and visuals.
- Post
Activity for group involves:
a.
An activity to do on one’s own that is relevant
to the topic.
- Typed
Report to be turned in after discussion:
a.
Brief description of discussion topic (one
paragraph)
b.
Brief description of discussion strategy and
flow plan (one paragraph)
c.
List of questions organized by category and
priority
d.
Brief description of pre and post activities
e.
Self assessment of entire project (one paragraph
per participant)
f.
Bibliography
